When it comes to collapsible music stands, you either get reliability along with a large size (see the Peak music stand or a portable Manhasset), or a compact size and the stand ends up being totally flimsy (all wire stands). I think the KraftGeek design stands out and having a portable music stand that is both incredibly compact and sturdy is something that makes heading to the gig a little easier.

    Thank you for the video. I usually go for 80/20 on my Martin, but since I’ll be recording it with mics, I decided to try the flat tops. They sound great and almost no squeak. I still prefer the 80/20, but it is what is. For a recording setting and my way of playing, I’ll be recording with the flat tops to avoid any headaches during the mixing process.

    I just ordered that and stumbled on to this. Nice approach and comparison. Two years late to the party but for what it's worth: There was just a hint of grit and pronounced low frequencies with the wireless on the cleans but not a deal breaker for me. Should be even less with single coils and I believe a slight EQ adjustment would even it out. It was worse on the fuzzy stuff. Maybe using lower fuzz/distortion gain and bumping up the volume to compensate loudness would counter the ill side-effects along with again, some subtractive EQ on the problem frequencies. It did a fine job on the bass. I usually roll off the sub low end on my bass amps anyway. A lot of bass amps include that feature. I thought the wireless added a nice ambience to the acoustic and sounded better to my ears than the cable. Bottom line is it does color the sound and that makes it personally subjective. All my four wireless color the sound. Even my Boss WL-20 wireless colors the sound though. I use them all and adjust to taste.

    Flatwounds for jazz. Less noise, more mellow. Roundwound seems a bit more edgy, but for jazz, a smooth sound is preferred

    I used to play my D28 directly into a mic, and never had any feedback problem. That was way back in the 70's, but we played all the rock clubs around the Bay Area (5 piece band) . I guess that was before most clubs liked to have the sound turned up to 11, so that it caused pain & hearing loss, but even then there were clubs where the sound was so loud we had to have some ear protection on stage. Still when I used the acoustic guitar, I played directly into a mic and there was no feedback.

    Both K&K and Journey Tek highly recommend either Super Glue GEL or Gorilla Glue GEL for the ultimate in tone, volume & sustain. Both companies state that although the 2-sided sticky tape can be used, it won't sound anywhere near as good vs the glue. So a guitarist really needs to question the permanent installment of either one of these pickup systems. I installed the Journey Tek EP001K in all 4 of my fine acoustic guitars using the glue, and I absolutely LOVE the sound with all 4 of my guitars. They sound incredibly authentic & natural through my Boss Acoustic Pro Singer amp.

    Just wanted to say thanks for putting this together. For what it’s worth, I gigged for years with the baggs anthem using a feedback buster in my Ibanez. We had a loud drummer, but we got by with little feedback issues. Worst case scenario, I could have adjusted the balance to a tad bit less mic and more under saddle, but I never had to. Cheers!

    Interesting! I put on a set of Chromes NYXL to try after using Thomastik...and I hated them so much that I took them off a week later and put on a new set of Thomastik's. 335 Dot through a Henriksen Blu 6 amp ... the difference in playability and tone were apparent to my ears. The Chromes were way to bright for the style of jazz that I like to play.

    Really helpful. I’m definitely trying the flat tops for my finger picking. I think if you strum or need sustained notes then round wound do the job, but… I play mainly arpeggios and ostinatos so all that sustain sometimes kinda gets in the way, and the flats had more definition in the mids I thought. Don’t get me wrong, I love my HD28V and don’t laugh , 😉 but I’ve also fallen in love with my son’s half size Harley Benton Travel. £90 🤷🏻‍♂️ it is what it is, but capoed from the 2nd to the 5th or even 7th fret and played finger style it has a sound all its own. Steel string, yes but also hints of Dobro, classical, even Ukulele and harp. Especially when the strings are old. I believe Nick Drake used to play his strings to death before recording because he liked that shortened, more rounded sound. Wondering if there are completely flat wound strings for acoustic and how they would sound. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I certainly wouldn’t miss the squeak. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Great A/B video, thanks. 🙏😎☯️

      Yep, in fact you can use an Ebow on an acoustic without a pickup at all :)

    • @oliviermtd
      @oliviermtd 12 днів тому

      @AlexPriceMusician Thanks for your reply. I have to disagree. I have an acoustic guitar, I have an E-bow and I have an old wooden Dean Markley soundhole pickup. The E-bow doesn't work. (The E-bow user guide does warn about the issue ) An E-bow works by interacting with the magnetic field of the guitar microphone. I use it with my electric guitar. Hence my question. Does the Fish man pickup produce a magnetic field for the E-bow to interact with? Have you actually used an E-bow with that pickup? Sorry for being a bit if a pain😢. 😁

    • @AlexPriceMusician
      @AlexPriceMusician 12 днів тому

      @@oliviermtd I don’t know, maybe you have a different E-Bow than I have but it works regardless of whether or not there’s a pickup. I’ve used it on my Martin with the K&K Pure Mini, which is a piezo disc pickup mounted under the bridge. Ive used it on my old Gibson mandolin which has no pickup. I’ve even seen them used on a grand piano. I have the original Ebow, not the TC Electronic or another brand’s version. There are certainly harmonic nodes where the Ebow will not work for each note so you have to move it around. Maybe that’s what the documentation is referring to? I just went and checked my Ebow with the Eastman that I have the Rare Earth Mic Blend installed it. It works.

    • @oliviermtd
      @oliviermtd 12 днів тому

      @@AlexPriceMusician thank you so much for taking the time to reply in detail, and for the specific test. I do own an original E-bow. So, your last comment puzzled me. I went back to the user guide which doesn't explicitly say it wouldn't work on an unplugged guitar, but the long explanation about the mic selection and the finding of the hotspot got me thinking it would not work. And when I tested it on my acoustic guitar, I got the confirmation it wasn't... Because I wasn't using the E-bow correctly!😂😖 I held it too far from the strings... It has to be really really close. So, thank you again because you helped me greatly.

    Your playing is great!😮 I'm 60, but when I grow up I will play better than you!😡 🤣😂😅 Well, for solo guitar the body transducer does sound better, for being fuller in tonal range, especially the bass range comes out more, but in a mix, with a band, then you may be better off with an under saddle transducer, because the bass can add mud to the mix, and the mids and trebles be too low. I do agree that they soften the saddle to bridge contact which should be hard for best energy transfer, and for that Taylor has a "Behind saddle" transducer system with 3 individual trimable (Tension adjust) transducers one for a pair of strings. So you can dial them in which act like pressure adjustable EQ's. It doesn't mess with the saddle to bridge contact either, and it even sounds a little better for it.

    I honestly thought the two string sets sounded near the same. The larger gage had more bass and that's what I like. I like the boom.

    Great video! What's the best pickup for left-handed guitarists? Can you use all of these on a LH guitar?
